Macro trends versus specific decisions.

Q: What do the macro trends of a particular city or area have on the specific decision a business needs to make?

A: None what-so-ever.

Discussing macro trends when a client has a specific decision to make is the same as changing the topic of the conversation.  It’s a misdirection.  It may help you look more knowledgeable in the short term but it doesn’t help with making the actual decision that must be made.

Yes, macro trends come into play once the options are narrowed down regarding what needs to be done.  But until then they shouldn’t be part of the discussion.

As advisers our job is to ensure that the right information is presented to our clients at the right time.  Introducing interesting facts that aren’t yet important shouldn’t be part of it.
