Was reading an article from Jeff Jarvis over at Medium about Sorkin’s new Jobs movie and one of the comments pointed me down a path to a wonderful quote from Steve Jobs (pulled from within a long Interview):
I think the artistry is in having an insight into what one sees around them. Generally putting things together in a way no one else has before and finding a way to express that to other people who don’t have that insight so they can get some of the advantage of that insight that makes them feel a certain way or allows them to do a certain thing.
Artists exist in engineering (think of some of the amazing bridges and buildings around the world), software design (the Google homepage is art), management consulting (there are several titans of strategic thinking), and any industry out there. The people we remember forever are artists in their own rights. To strive for something better is art.
The most I can ask for anyone I work with is for us to strive for something bigger and better together. How can we take 2 and 2 and get 7. How can we make something difficult to understand seem obvious. How can we reduce hundreds of years of knowledge and theory down to 10 words. This is art. This is why we do what we do.
